We visited some Olmec ruins yesterday which consisted of a large mound (~400ft high) surrounded by replicas of the stone ruins
. The highlight for me was Jenny's discovery of leaf-cutter ants marching along their well trodden paths. I spent half the time on my stomach trying to photograph the little buggers with a macro lens I borrowed from my grandfather.

As we walked among the grounds a group of teenage boys gathered outside in the parking lot began beating homemade percussion instruments. They were really talented and it made for a surreal experience as we explored the ancient ruins. Robin joked, “This is the beginning of the ancient ritual that ends with them storming our van and stealing my dog!”

We’re currently in the town of Paraso which seems to pretty much be run by the government owned oil company Pemex since there are massive refineries surrounding it and seemingly a bit more cash in the town. We spent the day on a wind swept beach where Ray proceed to get totally covered in sand while attempting to nap
. Tomorrow we plan on doing a long haul to get as far up into the Yucatan as possible to begin visiting some of the famous ruins: Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba etc.Stay tuned!
